DR. JOUHAR KANJHIRHLA

SENIOR DOCTOR OF CGH EARTH KALARI KOVILAKOM HOSPITAL, INTRODUCED US THE RESORT CALLED PALACE OF AYURVEDA, PERHAPS THE FIRST AND ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND. HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING THOUGHTS.

Can there be a royal way to deep healing? We believe, it can. Kalari Kovilakom is the Palace for Ayurveda, perhaps the first and only one of its kind. Located near Kollangode in the Palghat District of North Kerala, India, and fringed on one side by the majestic Western Ghat mountain ranges, Kalari Kovilakom the 200 year old palace, is where history meets natural tranquility.

THE PALACE OF AYURVEDA

Kalari Kovilakom is the Palace for Ayurveda, perhaps the first and only one of its kind. If the old legends are to be believed, healing is part of Kalari's very soul. Stories are told of a Prince who came to the foothills of Kerala's Annamalai Hills around the 10th century. He came to cure himself in the healing spring waters of this land and sought the medicinal Venga tree that grew here in profusion. Dharmavarman stayed on to found a kingdom, Vengunad, The Land of the Venga Tree. And for all the days to come, his descendants held sway over these silent and green foothills. It was in the 19th century that they built Kalari Kovilakom.

A NEW LIFE IN KALARI KOVILAKOM

Today, Kalari Kovilakom has been restored and recreated into a unique Ayurveda hospital. Its face is the face of the warrior-king, elegant and expansive. But its heart is that of a sage, offering a deep healing, a doorway to the union of the mind, body and spirit. Combining the healing experience of India's ancient medicinal system, Ayurveda, with the grace and scale of palace living. The intent and purpose of Kalari Kovilakom is to give you a chance to start your life all over again. Ayurveda, if correctly followed, promises not only a new body and mind, but a deep connection with the spirit. To the ancient Indians, this was a cosmic connection. A chance to be reborn in this life itself.

AYURVEDA VAIDYAS & HEALING

Dr. Dr. Jouhar Kanjhirhla, senior doctor and his team are truly old fashion Vaidyas. Mindfulness, awareness, a therapeutic engagement of the senses and an inward integration of the body, mind and spirit. All these and more aspects of the Ayurvedic healing process are what one gains at Kalari Kovilakom. Every therapy is personal. The treatments are customised for you by the doctors, often combined with yoga, special diet and other methods to provide deep healing from within and without. Every treatment is based on patient needs and ayurvedic body type. Even the food you're served is individual, with health drinks and herbal preparations that vary with your treatment. The result is nothing less than a return to the womb.

Kalari Kovilakom offers the most authentic form of ayurveda programs and treatments. They are combination of physical, mental and spiritual therapies, well complimented and supported by yoga and meditation practices. It is not a holiday resort but a place to immerse you in a life style that was advocated by ancient Indian traditions. This treatments helps you to balance your energies, outer material world and the inner spiritual world, leaving you refreshed and energized.

YOGA & MEDITATION

Morning yoga and evening meditations supplement the treatment, but the central healing idea of the place is Karma Yoga: “We closely practice the traditional ayurvedic approach which involves a holistic approach to physical and mental wellbeing. The entire team is trained to be sensitive to the environment, to individual care and to the CGH Earth’s ethos. The treatment processes are intensely focused on patient care and recovery. Every patient is gently guided and supported through each aspect of the treatment and is encouraged to conform to a disciplined adherence and the prescribed lifestyle thereafter. This ensures a permanent state of healthy living.”

AYURVEDIC KITCHEN IS A SHRINE

Kalari Kovilakom's pure Ayurvedic kitchen is a shrine to ideas first outlined by the ayurvedic physicians of more than a thousand years ago. Foods are prepared in brass, iron or clay vessels only. And  thechefs weave their pure vegetarian magic with only the minimum of oil and almost no heavy spices or chillis. You may find your first meal at Kalari somewhat blan. But within a day or two, your palate softens, becomes more sensitive. Suddenly, the subtle flavours of pure spices and fresh tropical vegetables begin to come to the fore. Each meal becomes a medley of subtle textures and aromas, rather than the taste assaults most of us are used to. Even better, you need to eat less and less to feel completely sated!

LIVING SPACE

Kalari Kovilakom has 18 palatial suites which offer the experience of authentic palace living, each of which exhibits an array of modern amenities.

The guest rooms at the Old Guest Wing exhibit the 20’s colonial Western styled guest rooms. The section was especially built for the European visitors and feature four poster beds and 30’s style tile flooring. The guest rooms at the Palace Wing exhibits traditional Kerala architecture reminiscent of the ‘Zenana’. The antique swing Diwan, four poster beds, air conditioning, lovely old style bathrooms and hot & cold water are some of the features of these rooms.

TRADITION OF ART & KALARI

Since the Vengunad kings were patrons of the classical arts, especially Kathakali dance and Carnatic music, such cultural programmes are an essential part of the daily ritual at Kalari Kovilakom. Dance and music performances, with the use of traditional Indian instruments such as mrudangam, flute, violin, harmonium etc depicting mythological stories are a way of life here as in early times. The Kollengode Arattu, a traditional temple festival held annually during the first week of January to honour the Kollengode deity Avvappan has been another custom passed down through the generations with which Kalari Kovilakom is closely associated.
